The King Protea - Our National Flower

Spending as much time as I do in the mountains, I still never get tired of seeing a beautiful protea in bloom on the mountain!

Why are proteas our national flower?
I often am asked why the King Protea is our national flower. The King Protea was chosen not only because it is the largest and most stunning of the protea flowers, but also because it's tough and adaptable. King protea bushes regenerate from intense wildfires and cope with long-term drought, so it's a symbol for South Africa's resilience, national values, and culture.
Where are proteas found?

Proteas are primarily found in two countries: South Africa and Australia. South Africa is particularly known for its rich diversity of proteas, with the majority of species being native to the country. In Australia, proteas are found predominantly in the southwestern region, including Western Australia.

While South Africa and Australia are the main countries where proteas naturally occur, these plants have also been cultivated and introduced to other parts of the world. Proteas are grown as ornamental plants in various countries with suitable climates, including the United States, New Zealand, Israel, Chile, and several European countries. However, it's important to note that the natural distribution of proteas extends primarily to South Africa and Australia.

When do proteas flower?
The flowering season of proteas can vary depending on the species and the region in which they are grown. In general, proteas tend to flower during the late fall, winter, and early spring months in their native habitats of South Africa and Australia. This corresponds to the months of June to September in the Southern Hemisphere.

Some specific species of proteas have more defined flowering seasons. For example, the king protea (Protea cynaroides), which is the national flower of South Africa, typically blooms from late winter to early summer, peaking in spring (August to November in the Southern Hemisphere). Other species, such as the pincushion protea (Leucospermum spp.) and the banksia protea (Banksia spp.), may have different flowering periods within this general timeframe.

It's important to note that when proteas are cultivated in different regions or climates outside of their native range, their flowering season may be different, influenced by local environmental conditions and growing practices.

Proteas were not considered scarce. Proteas are a diverse group of flowering plants native to South Africa, and they are widely cultivated both in their native range and in other parts of the world. They are popular for their unique and striking flower heads, which come in various shapes and colors.

Factors such as environmental changes, habitat loss, and other human activities can affect the availability and conservation status of our protea species.
